Medical Education Duration and Structure
Medical education in Russia is structured in accordance with international standards. Below you can find in detail the stages of the general medicine program and the content of each stage. The total education duration is 7 years including the preparatory faculty, and 6 years as the medicine program alone.
Preparatory Faculty (Language and Basic Sciences)
For students who will receive education in Russian, the first year is devoted to intensive Russian language training. During this process, medical terminology and basic biology and chemistry topics are also covered. Students who choose the English-taught medicine program skip this stage and begin medical education directly. In the preparatory faculty, 4-6 hours of Russian language courses are provided daily, and by the end of the year students reach a level where they can follow medical education in Russian.
Basic Medical Sciences
Courses that form the foundation of medical education, such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology, embryology, and microbiology, are intensively covered in these years. In anatomy courses, cadaver-based practice is carried out, and experiments are conducted with modern devices in biochemistry laboratories. During this period, students comprehensively learn the structure and functioning of the human body, from the molecular level to organ systems.
Preclinical Education (Pathology and Pharmacology)
Pathology, pharmacology, propaedeutics, and diagnostic methods are the main topics of this year. Students learn the mechanisms of diseases, the principles of drug action, and basic diagnostic methods. This period is a critical stage where the transition from laboratory to clinical environment begins. Patient examination techniques are practiced in simulator centers.
Clinical Internship (Rotations)
In these years, students rotate in various clinical branches in a hospital environment. Internships are completed in many branches such as internal medicine, general surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics, neurology, psychiatry, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, and emergency medicine. Each rotation lasts between 2-6 weeks, and students work on real patient cases under the supervision of an attending physician.
Internship and Graduation Preparation
The final year is a period of intensive clinical practice and graduation preparation. Students develop their independent patient follow-up skills by practicing primary care medicine. Preparation for the state examination, thesis work, and clinical case presentations are important components of this period. After graduation, the diploma is received with the title of General Medicine Doctor (Vrach).
